Giant Viper L5A1
The Giant Viper is unique to the British Army, and is designed to clear a path approximately one tank wide and 600 feet long through any type of minefield. The cluster of eight solid fuel rockets launches a plastic hose filled with 1500 kg of PE4 explosive over the path to be cleared, and is stabilised in flight by small parachutes. After the hose has landed, and is clear of the launching vehicle it is detonated.
Generally the Centurion AVRE will then be the first vehicle through the gap, using it’s blade to prepare the route for following vehicles. This early version of Giant Viper can be towed by Centurion AVRE Mk-5, Combat Engineer Tractor (CET) or FV432 (With special drawbar)
This 1/35th scale model by Brian Fawcett features ‘bulged’ tyres, detailed rocket cluster, optional canvas cover for the rockets, and etched brass set with tie-downs, reflectors, guards and shield.
