Hillman ‘Tilly’ 4x2 Utility
The Hillman Tilly (sometimes called Hillytillys) or more properly Car 4x2 Light Utility was one of the most well known and mass produced British vehicles of WW2 with approximately 19,500 made. Developed in late 1939-40 the Hillman Tilly served in almost every British unit of the war, and was the UK equivalent of the Jeep. Compared to the Austin and Morris models the narrower Hillman Minx doors resulted in a shorter vehicle length but with a longer GS load body.
There were in fact 4 ‘Tilly’ types; Austin, Hillman, Morris and Standard, and WW2 production of all types is estimated at 65,300 vehicles. They are a unique, important and well loved part of MV history.
