Mighty ANTAR Mk-1 Ballasted Tractor
The Thornycroft Mighty Antar was originally developed in 1949 as a super-heavy civilian 6x4 tractor for hauling steel pipeline sections across the Iraqi desert. It was named in honour of the Arabian Poet-warrior Antar Ibn Shadded (famed for his strength and endurance). At the time ANTAR was the largest tractor ever made in the UK and was further developed as a tank transporter for the British Army, and over a period of 35 years from the early 1950’s to mid 1980’s, Mighty ANTAR performed all the British Army heavy haulage tasks. Whether the load was a; Centurion, Conqueror, Chieftain or a host of lesser tonnage AFV’s, ANTAR lugged them around from A to B.
ANTAR was ultimately replaced by the equally impressive Scammell Commander. This extensive 1:35th scale resin model kit by David Jane, depicts the original FV12001 Mk-1 Ballasted version for towing drawbar trailers (one of a contract supplied with a large winch to the RAF then returned to the Army). The kit comes with an etched brass detailing set, extensive full colour decals and full chassis, cab interior, engine, transmission and winch details. The huge ballast body includes, ballast weights, davit and all internal/external fittings. We have a matching trailer kit (K168) of the DYSON 50T Drawbar Trailer FV3601 Mk-1.
