Mighty ANTAR Mk-3 (5th Wheel) Tractor
The Thornycroft Mighty Antar was originally developed in 1949 as a super-heavy civilian 6x4 tractor for hauling steel pipeline sections across the Iraqi desert. It was named in honour of the Arabian Poet-warrior Antar Ibn Shadded (famed for his strength and endurance). At the time ANTAR was the largest tractor ever made in the UK and was further developed as a tank transporter for the British Army, and over a period of 35 years from the early 1950’s to mid 1980’s, Mighty ANTAR performed all the British Army heavy haulage tasks. Whether the load was a; Centurion, Conqueror, Chieftain or a host of lesser tonnage AFV’s, ANTAR lugged them around from A to B.
The final Mk-3 version was a major rework and incorporated the Rolls-Royce 16.2 litre C8SFL/843 diesel engine. The revised bodywork with single radiator gave a more sleek look. All the lessons learned from the early vehicles were incorporated into the Mk-3, making it a refined, reliable and professional classic. ANTAR was ultimately replaced by the equally impressive Scammell Commander and those familiar with Commander will see from this model how that design evolved.
