The Fi-103 ‘Hellhound’ (V1) was designed as a low cost weapon, and was armed with a 1000kg warhead, and powered by a kerosine burning Argus ram jet engine. This engine only works once the V1 is accelerated to over 200 m.p.h.For ground launching the ‘ramp’ is actually a gigantic steam catapult, designed by the Walther company, and uses the explosive mixing of chemicals to generate high pressure steam. This catapult is capable of accelerating the 2 tonne V1

On the 2nd of October 1944 a 13 tonne V2(A4) Missile rose from the giant Peenemunde test stand-VII driven by the 56,000 lb thrust motor to an altitude of 84,000 feet. The missile impacted near its’ target 180km (112 miles) away 5-minutes later at a speed of 2,600 feet/second (1772 mph). The V2 was the most significant technical achievement of the “Rocket team” lead by Dr Werner Von Braun, and paved the way for modern ICBM systems, satellite launchers, and the exploration of space. The first military firings took place on September 1944, and in all 5,500 V2’s were launced from mobile firing units, and once fired there was no known defence. So how advanced was the V2 then? Well as a footnote to the history, the only credible defence was demonstrated 46 years later when the U.S.Army deployed Patriot to attempt to deal with the terror firing of Scud (and modified Scud) missiles by Iraq during the Gulf war.

This model consists of a three piece V2 missile with seperate fins, and it is the only 1/35th scale model of V2 that is the correct shape. Also included are a correct standard pattern mobile firing platform and blast deflector, and a resin scenic base with steel ribbed foundation plate. (Due to the weight of this product there is an additional £6.00 GPB shipping supplement)
